We regularly get asked questions about the work HomeFixit carries out.  We have answered some of the more common ones below, but if you have a question that isn't covered below, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Q    I'd heard the electrical regulations had changed - are you allowed to do electrical work in my home?

A    Yes, I am a qualified electrician so I can carry out electrical related jobs and issue certificates as required.  The Building Regulations require that most electrical jobs in your home should be carried out by a qualified person and that an appropriate certificate be issued.  Without these certificates, you may have difficulty if you sell your home.

Q    What sort of jobs do you do?

A   Generally, I try to concentrate on small electrical and plumbing jobs and small household repairs. My background has been single-handedly developing property which I did for a number of years before moving to Caithness.  Simply, I love DIY and I've made it my business!  Generally I can do most things but that said, I am human and of course I do have my limitations.  Rest assured that my work is always to a good standard and I won't take on a job I'm not confident about.  I stress I'm not here to replace the tradesmen you would use for larger jobs.

Q    Do you still do Kitchen and Bathroom refits?

A   Generally I try and concentrate on small jobs that take no more than a few days to complete.  This helps keep my workload practical and ensures I am available reasonably quickly when customers need work done.  So I'm not tending to take on full refits, but I will carry out repairs and refurbishments - re-grouting, replacement taps, bath or shower sealant, small amount of tiling etc.

Q    Do you do decorating?

A   I will carry out small decorating repairs such as patching holes and repairing localised water damage but I don't tend to take on larger decorating jobs.

Q    I see you do plumbing work - can you repair my central heating?

A    It is illegal for anybody to work on your gas appliance without being registered.  That means I can't work on your gas boiler, but I can replace a leaking radiator or repair a pump for example.  Solid fuel, gas and oil fired boilers are all covered by strict regulations designed to ensure your safety, so I would advise that all boiler repairs are best entrusted to a fully qualified installer.

Q    I've been trying to get some work done for sometime, but I can't even get anybody to quote for it.  It's quite a big job - can you help?

A    At HomeFixit, generally we concentrate on smaller jobs.  This is to ensure my waiting list is manageable and customers don't have to wait too long for us to visit.  We recognise that the trades can be busy, so it can be a frustrating process trying to get work done.   Please feel free to call us - we will be happy to discuss your requirements.   We work very hard to stick to our agreed schedule, so you can be assured if we say we will turn up, we will!  If we can't do your job, we will tell you and where possible suggest other contacts.

Even if the job is too big for us, we may still be able to help by carrying out a temporary repair to prevent further deterioration or damage.

Q  Are you insured to work in my home?

A  Yes, HomeFixit covers £1m Public Liability Insurance, so in the very unlikely event that something goes wrong, you can rest assured that we have the cover to put it right.
